Finish selections suited to Atlantic humidity and Porto heritage fabric

First Course

Azulejo accents without pastiche

Blue-and-white tile panels can anchor a café identity, but covering every wall reads tourist-shop rather than neighbourhood gathering place. We limit azulejo to one focal plane — often behind the counter or framing a single arched niche.

Contemporary matte-glaze tiles from Aveiro workshops pair well with raw plaster elsewhere, keeping the room grounded in the present while nodding to regional craft.

Second Course

Timber species for counters and shelving

Reclaimed pine from Minho barns brings warmth but needs sealing against espresso steam. Douglas fir ply with visible edge grain offers a lighter Scandinavian tone popular in Foz renovation projects.

We document oil maintenance intervals in the finish schedule so owners know when to reapply hardwax before winter damp sets in.

Third Course

Countertop durability in high-touch zones

Compact laminate survives daily wipe-downs better than honed marble, which etches from citrus and wine within months. For premium briefs we specify Portuguese limestone with a matte impregnator, accepting patina as part of the character.

Waterfall edges on front counters protect MDF carcasses from mop water pooling along Ribeira floors that slope toward the river.

Fourth Course

Flooring near the Douro humidity line

Solid oak boards swell in unventilated ground floors; engineered oak with a cork underlay performs more predictably. Large-format terrazzo tiles suit open kitchens visible from dining areas and tolerate chair drag better than polished concrete.

Threshold transitions between interior tile and exterior calçada should be flush to avoid trip points when terrace furniture moves seasonally.

Fifth Course

Upholstery for all-day seating

Commercial-grade bouclé and treated linen resist staining while staying breathable during humid August afternoons. Dark leather banquettes hide scuff marks but heat up in south-facing windows — we add cushion gaps for air circulation.
